Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is one of the most common forms of dental sedation used. Commonly known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that will put your child in a very calm and relaxed state, allowing them to get their dental work done without a fuss!

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide is a gas sedation that is administered via a mask worn over the nose during treatment. The gas is safe for children and is quick to take effect, meaning children will start feeling relaxed almost immediately. While the mask is being worn, your child will be calm, relaxed and at ease, allowing our doctors to do more work without interruption. Once the treatment is complete, we will remove the mask and the sedation will quickly lose effect, bringing your little one back to their normal self.

When is Nitrous Oxide Used?

Our team utilizes nitrous oxide when one of our little patients feels too anxious at the dentist, or when we need to perform more significant dental work than just a routine cleaning. We will always discuss with you what option your child may need and thoroughly explain the process to you. Many parents, and our own team, find that nitrous oxide can make a child’s dental experience better from the start. When your little one has no reason to fear the dentist, and has a good experience from the beginning, they are likely to develop positive oral health habits for the future.

If you would like to discuss using nitrous oxide for your child’s next dental appointment, please contact our Charlotte, NC office! Our team will gladly answer any questions you may have and help you feel confident in making the best decision for your little one’s health.
